Paddling with Purpose: A Joyful Day on the Water for IKCA Families
In July, IKCA families experienced a truly special day on the water thanks to the incredible efforts of Oscar Casiro and the generous support of South Island SUP and Mer Tales Ocean Journeys.
As part of his inspiring Paddling with Purpose fundraiser, Oscar is paddling 750km in his 75th year to raise awareness and funds for Island Kids Cancer Association. We were honoured to join him for a community paddle at Gonzales Beach in Oak Bay, and the day could not have been more perfect.
The cove was calm and sheltered from the wind and offered the ideal setting for families to explore the ocean by stand-up paddleboard. All boards, equipment, and expert instruction were generously donated by South Island SUP and Mer Tales Ocean Journeys, making this experience possible for everyone.
There was a wonderful turnout, with participants of all ages taking to the water with many trying paddleboarding for the very first time. While some glided across the bay under the guidance of skilled instructors, others relaxed on the sandy beach, played in the sunshine, and cheered on their family members from the shore. One creative child even brought along a fishing rod, casting lines from the front of a paddleboard while being gently towed across the bay.
We extend our deepest thanks to Oscar for his incredible dedication to our cause. His commitment not only raised vital funds, but also brought our community together in a meaningful, joyful way. A heartfelt thank you as well to South Island SUP and Mer Tales Ocean Journeys for your generosity and for making this event so accessible and memorable.
